Cody Renard Richard is a celebrated stage manager, producer, educator, and activist whose professional life as a multi-talented artist has had a profound influence on American theater. His recent visit to the 2025 Met Gala only serves to further his impact on the arts and culture landscape.

A Trailblazer Behind the Curtain

Born in Texas, Cody Renard Richard cultivated his passion for the performing arts at a young age and proceeded to earn a BFA in Stage Management from Webster University. His Broadway experience began with assistant stage manager credits for shows like Kinky Boots, Motown the Musical, and The Lion King. Demonstrating excellent organizational and leadership abilities, he transitioned to production stage manager responsibilities on highly regarded shows like Freestyle Love Supreme, Sweeney Todd, Lempicka, and *Once Upon a Mattress.

Richard’s repertoire extends beyond Broadway; he has also been involved in television events like the Tony Awards and VMAs on MTV, and Metropolitan Opera and Cirque du Soleil productions.

Educator and Advocate

In addition to his stage management career, Richard is a passionate teacher and diversity champion in theatre. He has served as adjunct faculty at some of the schools like New York University, Columbia University, and Fordham University. In 2020, he also established the Cody Renard Richard Scholarship Program with the Broadway Advocacy Coalition to empower and support BIPOC theatre students.

Honored at the 2025 Met Gala

On May 5, 2025, Richard was present at the Met Gala, honoring the event theme, “Tailored for You,” which paid tribute to Black menswear evolution and dandyism. The theme went in tandem with the Costume Institute exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which emphasized the rich heritage of Black fashion from the 18th century to date.

Richard’s presence at the gala was not just a moment to show off his individual sense of style but also a symbol of where theater and fashion met, a reminder of his own presence in more than one artistic field.

Recognition and Legacy

Richard was named to the Kennedy Center’s Next 50 list for his success in the arts as a tribute to leaders shaping the future of American culture.

With his performing career, educational work, and activism, Cody Renard Richard continues to inspire and break barriers for future generations within the performing arts.
